Tim McGraw

During the first part of May, 2014 Timberwolf was commissioned to create a guitar for Tim McGraw. The only specifics we had were that he wanted his daughters names on it.

We worked on the concept of how to put the names on and do it in a tasteful manner. Tim (Our Tim seen to the right making final adjustments) came up with a number of design ideas then refined them until we landed with what ended up being used on the guitar.

From there, the body shape evolved to become what we call our Twin Double. The upper cutaway is a non-mirror image of the lower cutaway, so that it was intentionally non symmetrical. A Hand cut was added so the upper frets would be more comfortable to access.

The choice of twin blades for the pickups was in keeping with the “Double” theme. The pickups were wound to develop a different sound that what has been available from us in the past.

As with all of our guitars, this involved a lot of one-off hand work. The color was chosen to highlight the names of Mr. McGraw’s dauthters and his wife, Faith Hill, and to be a stage friendly color. In Tim’s honor, the custom blended color has been named Bayou Copperhead Metallic.

The main wood used is Birdseye Maple. The names are inlaid Rosewood in a script that was hand laid by Tim (Our Tim). The pickup tops and fretboard are also Rosewood. The neck’s Thin C Shape is slightly modified from our usual necks. Tuners are Open Gear HipShot and a Hipshot Bridge was used.

As with all Timberwolf Guitars we installed D’Addario NYXL 10-46 Strings.

As you look through the photos, you are seeing the guitar being played within 15 minutes of delivery.

It was a blast crafting Mr McGraw’s guitar and getting to spend some time with him and the band.

Some days it’s just great to get up in the morning.
